complete bedroom colour guide: green

More than a design trend, biophilic design taps into a core part of human nature; our intrinsic desire to feel connected to the natural world.

There’s nothing we love more than colours inspired by the landscapes that ground and renew us, and there’s arguably no better example of this than green.

why green works so well in interior schemes

Implicitly associated with renewal, plant growth, rural fields, forests, and other fertile landscapes, green is linked to research suggesting it makes us feel particularly comfortable and at-ease. How? Scientists believe that because our eyes readily detect wavelengths corresponding with green more readily than any other colour, it has a calming effect on our nervous system. Karen Haller states in The Little Book of Colour, that ‘we are reassured by green on a very primitive level’, because ‘where there is green, we can find food and water—it equals life.’

So, what better colour than green for our bedrooms—the space where our body repairs and heals?

how to choose greens

With greens, if you err on the side of warmth, you will generally get much cosier and enveloping results than if you go for colder shades.

It’s a must-have hue for creating a sleep space that soothes and restores all year round. In the summer, rooms instantly feel calmer, and in the winter, warmer, cosier and cocoon-like, transforming how we feel and how we rest.

the green that hugs you back

The favourite of all nature-inspired green hues? Beautiful Sage. Soft and grounding, it brings a little nature (and a whole lot of tranquillity) inside.

Dubbed the new neutral, it’s a colour chameleon, working well with almost any colour and making for such an easy base to build a decorative, inviting scheme around—both in classic and contemporary design (which is why it’s such a staple in a decorator’s palette!).

green colour pairings

Greens pair particularly well with earthier, rustier tones and soft pastel shades.

A classic combination, pretty, dusky pinks are the perfect catalyst for earthy greens to really come to life. Similarly, faded terracotta’s are also a beautifully striking combination.

Sage green’s earthiness mixed in with deep, rich reds makes a space look truly special (not Christmas-y, though, just wonderfully tasteful and cheerful).

building a biophilic scheme

Alternatively, for a full nature-inspired biophilic scheme, pair with warm, blue tones for a grounding feeling the moment you step in your bedroom. You can also pair with the palest shades of blue for a magical, ethereal effect.

natural textures, layer by layer

Think linen, rattan, and unfinished wood for a relaxed yet refined scheme.

For a cohesive tonal aesthetic, mixing earthier sages with brighter or bolder tones of green works brilliantly. This could mean incorporating plants, introducing a textured green rug, or considering rich, scenic artwork of dreamy landscapes.

Combining such elements can help create sensory-provoking comfort and depth in your space, mimicking the layered leaves and luscious shrubberies of the natural world—all in the confines of your own home. A serious option for soothing the senses!

using whites with green

If you’re not ready to go full green, whites with lots of green pigment are also a lovely way to add earthiness to a space!

Our sage bedding shade is a soft, slightly warm and incredibly well-balanced green, which makes it ever so versatile and incredibly beautiful.
