GOTS strictly prohibits a long list of nasty chemicals used in conventional textiles—like flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and PFCs. Instead, only safe, approved substances are allowed, like low-impact dyes and hydrogen peroxide (no chlorine bleach here).
But it’s not just about what’s left out. GOTS makes sure that the way cotton is processed is responsible too, requiring proper wastewater treatment and environmental plans, along with strong labour standards.
